Argument linking in LTAG: A constraint-based implementation with XMG
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper develops a first systematic approach to argument linking in LTAG, building on typologically oriented work in Van Valin (2005). While Van Valin's argument linking mechanism is procedurally defined, we propose a constraint-based implementation. The advantage is that we can separate between the linguistic generalizations to be captured and algorith-mic considerations. The implementation is couched into the metagrammar framework eXtensible MetaGrammar (XMG).

XMG: eXtensible MetaGrammar
In this article, we introduce eXtensible MetaGrammar (XMG), a framework for specifying tree-based grammars such as Feature-Based Lexicalised Tree-Adjoining Grammars (FB-LTAG) and Interaction Grammars (IG). We argue that XMG displays three features which facilitate both grammar writing and a fast prototyping of tree-based grammars. Firstly, XMG is fully declarative. For instance, it permits a de...
متن کاملA Frame-Based Semantics of Locative Alternation in LTAG
In this paper we present an analysis of locative alternation phenomena in Russian and English within a frame-based LTAG syntax-semantics interface. The combination of a syntactic theory with an extended domain of locality and frames provides a powerful mechanism for argument linking. Furthermore, the concept of tree families and unanchored trees in LTAG allows for a decomposition of meaning int...
متن کاملA Metagrammar for Vietnamese LTAG
We present in this paper an initial investigation into the use of a metagrammar for explicitly sharing abstract grammatical specifications for the Vietnamese language. We first introduce the essential syntactic mechanisms of the Vietnamese language. We then show that the basic subcategorization frames of Vietnamese can be compactly represented by classes using the XMG formalism (eXtensible Meta...
متن کاملA Frame-Based Semantics of the Dative Alternation in Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammars
It is well known that the meaning of a verb-based construction depends not only on the lexical meaning of the verb but also on its specific syntagmatic environment. Lexical meaning interacts with constructional meaning in intricate ways and this interaction is crucial for theories of argument linking and the syntax-semantics interface. These insights have led proponents of Construction Grammar ...
متن کاملComputing Discourse Semantics: The Predicate-Argument Semantics of Discourse Connectives in D-LTAG
Abstract. D-LTAG is a discourse-level extension of Lexicalized Tree-Adjoining Grammar (LTAG), in which discourse syntax is projected by different types of discourse connectives and discourse interpretation is a product of compositional rules, anaphora resolution, and inference. In this paper, we present a D-LTAG extension of ongoing work on an LTAG syntaxsemantic interface. First, we show how p...
